Most of us were taught to make decisions with our brains. Weigh the pros and cons, think it through, write the list. That works for some people some of the time. It does not work for everyone, and it does not work for most people all of the time.
Human Design (HD) offers a different approach. It says the trustworthy signal for a decision is not the same for every body. Drawing on a blend of astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah, the chakra system, and quantum physics, HD has a lot to teach us about ourselves. One of the most useful things it offers is a decision-making strategy that might work better for us than whatever we are doing now.
Some of us get an immediate yes or no in our gut. Some of us feel our way toward clarity over days. Some of us do not actually know what we think until we hear ourselves say it out loud to another person. The signal is real. It is just wired differently depending on who you are.
Human Design names seven ways of deciding, called authorities. Emotional and sacral cover most people. The others are rarer, but if neither sounds like you, keep reading.
Find your authority
Your chart will tell you your authority in a couple of minutes. Look for the line called Authority (sometimes Inner Authority). Don’t have your chart yet, or don’t know your birth time? Start with Getting Started with Human Design. It covers free chart sites, what to do if you don’t know your birth time, and the five types.
The seven authorities
- Emotional: clarity over time, not in the moment
- Sacral: an immediate gut yes or no
- Self-Projected: hearing yourself talk it out
- Splenic: a quiet, one-time instinct in the moment
- Ego: what you truly want and are willing to commit to
- Mental (Environmental): the right place and the right sounding boards
- Lunar: a full month of noticing
The body that already knows
Some people get a physical response the moment a decision lands in front of them. A pull toward it, or a pull away. It is not thought. It is closer to appetite. You know if you are hungry for the sandwich or you are not.
If this is you, the work is not figuring out the answer. The answer is already there. The work is trusting it, and not letting your mind talk you out of it in the fifteen minutes after your gut has already spoken. If you catch yourself building a case for a “yes” that your body already said “no” to, that is the tell.
This is called sacral authority. If you have it, other people’s decision-making advice will often feel wrong to you, because most of that advice is written for a different kind of body.
The wave you have to ride
Some people do not have a clear yes or no in the moment. They have a feeling that shifts. Excited on Monday, uncertain on Tuesday, calm and sure on Wednesday. If you try to lock in a decision at the top of the wave, you will regret it at the bottom. If you try to lock it in at the bottom, you will miss things that were actually right for you.
If this is you, the honest answer is: there is no clarity in the moment. There is only clarity across time. You have to sit with a decision long enough to feel it in more than one mood. A couple of days at minimum for small things. Longer for the big ones. The wave is not a bug in your system. It is the instrument. You are reading the whole arc, not a single point on it.
The hard part is that the world often wants an answer now. Learning to say “I need to sit with this” is a skill, and it is not rude. It is accurate.
This is called emotional authority. It is the most common one, so if you are not sure yet, start here.
The thought you did not know you had
Some people genuinely do not know what they think until they say it. Not in a performative way. In a real way. The words come out of your mouth and you hear them and think, oh, that is what I actually believe. You were not being evasive before. You just had not met the thought yet.
If this is you, journaling helps a little, but talking helps more. Not to get advice. To get a mirror. You need someone who will let you talk without steering you, so you can hear yourself. The other person is not the decider. They are the wall you throw the ball at so you can see how it bounces.
Pick your mirrors carefully. Someone who jumps in with their own opinion will drown out the signal you were trying to hear.
This is called self-projected authority. Listen especially for what makes you happy and what sounds like you when you say it.
The quiet instinct that speaks once
Some people get a flash of knowing. Not a feeling that builds, not a gut churn. A small, clear hit: this is off, or this is fine. It often shows up as a sense of safety or unease about a person, a place, or a plan.
The catch is that it speaks once, in the moment, and it does not repeat itself. If you ignore it and ask again an hour later, it is gone, and your mind will happily fill the silence with reasons. People with this authority often say, “I knew. I just did not listen.”
If this is you, practice acting on the first quiet signal for small things, so you learn to trust it for the big ones. It is subtle, and it gets louder the more you honor it.
This is called splenic authority.
The heart that knows what it wants
Some people decide through willpower and desire. The question is not “is this good?” It is “do I actually want this, and am I willing to put myself behind it?” When the answer is yes, they commit fully. When it is no, no amount of logic will keep them going.
If this is you, notice what you say with conviction. “I want this.” “I will do this.” Pay attention to promises you make, because your word carries real weight for you, and overcommitting drains you fast. It is not selfish to ask what is in it for you. For this authority, that question is the signal.
There are two versions. Ego manifested (Manifestors) hear it in what they say they will do, then act and let others know. Ego projected (Projectors) hear it in what they say they want, often when talking with someone they trust after being invited in.
This is called ego or heart authority. It is rare.
The right room and the right people
Some people have no inner authority that lives in the body at all. Their clarity comes from the outside in: the place they are in and the people they talk with. A decision that feels muddy at the kitchen table might become obvious on a walk, or in a particular friend’s living room.
If this is you, talk it through with several trusted sounding boards, not to collect votes, but to hear how your own thinking lands in different conversations. Notice where you are when things feel clear. Environment is not a side detail for you. It is part of the decision.
This is called mental or environmental authority, sometimes called “no inner authority.” It is not a lack of anything. It just means your wisdom comes through reflection with others rather than from one spot in the body.
The month-long view
A small number of people reflect everything around them. They take in the moods and energy of the people and places they are with, and that shifts constantly. A decision made on any single day is shaped by whoever and whatever they were absorbing that day.
If this is you, the guidance is to give big decisions about a full lunar cycle, roughly 28 days. Talk about it with different people along the way. Notice how it feels in different settings and different weeks. By the end of the cycle, you will have felt the decision from many angles, and the answer tends to become steady.
The world will find this slow. That is fine. For you, it is the only way to be sure the decision is yours and not borrowed from the room.
This is called lunar authority, and it belongs only to Reflectors.
What to do with this
You do not have to believe in Human Design to use any of this. You just have to notice which one sounds like you, and then stop trying to make decisions the way the others would.
If you are the gut-response person: stop journaling about decisions your body already answered.
If you are the emotional wave person: stop pressuring yourself for an in-the-moment yes.
If you are the talk-it-out person: stop trying to think it through alone in a quiet room.
If you are the quiet-instinct person: stop asking the question twice.
If you are the heart and willpower person: stop committing to things you do not actually want.
If you are the right-room person: stop deciding in places that feel wrong, with people who do not reflect you well.
If you are the lunar person: stop letting anyone rush you through a month you need.
