Human Design (HD) is a map of how you are built to work. It draws on a blend of astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah, the chakra system, and quantum physics, and it has a lot to teach us about ourselves: how our energy works, how we best engage with other people, and how we make decisions we can trust.
You do not have to believe in it to get something out of it. Most people read their chart and recognize themselves right away. Others find that one piece clicks and explains something they have struggled with for years. Either way, it is a useful lens.
This is a starting point. Get your chart, find your type, and then follow the thread wherever it pulls you.
How to get your chart for free
A free chart will tell you your type and your authority in a couple of minutes. All you need is your birth date, birth time, and birth place. The time matters, so check your birth certificate if you can.
Free chart websites
- HumDes has a free chart and an app with plain-language explanations. A friendly place to start.
- MyBodyGraph is the official chart from Jovian Archive, the organization founded by Human Design’s originator.
Look for two lines on your chart: Type and Authority (sometimes called Inner Authority). Type is covered below. Authority has its own article: How You Actually Make a Decision.
Don’t know your birth time?
If you don’t know the time of your birth, guessing can give you the wrong type and authority. Judy loves narrowing down birth times by talking with you and comparing how the chart shifts across the day. When people later found their birth records, the times she narrowed down were within 15 minutes. The system can work that well.

The five types at a glance
Your type describes how your energy works. Your strategy is how you best engage with the world. Your authority is how you make the actual decision.
| Type | Strategy | When it is working | When it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generator | Wait to respond | Satisfaction | Frustration |
| Manifesting Generator | Wait to respond, then inform | Satisfaction | Frustration and anger |
| Manifestor | Inform before you act | Peace | Anger |
| Projector | Wait for the invitation | Success | Bitterness |
| Reflector | Wait a full lunar cycle | Surprise | Disappointment |
The “when it is not” column is useful. Those feelings are not character flaws. They are signals that you have drifted away from how you are built to work.
Generator
Generators have steady, renewable energy for work they love. When something lights them up, they can go all day and wake up ready to do it again. When it does not, they drag, and no amount of discipline fixes that.
The strategy is to wait to respond. That does not mean sitting still. It means letting life bring you something to react to, a question, an opportunity, an idea, and then noticing whether your body says yes. Generators who chase things they “should” want end up frustrated. Generators who follow their genuine yes end up satisfied.
Roughly a third of people are Generators.
Manifesting Generator
Manifesting Generators have the same renewable energy as Generators, with a faster, multi-track twist. They often juggle several interests at once, skip steps, and find the quickest route to where they are going. Starting something and then pivoting is not failure for them. It is how they find what fits.
The strategy is to wait to respond, then inform. Let something come to you, check for the gut yes, and then let the people affected know what you are about to do before you take off. Informing saves a lot of friction with people who cannot keep up.
Manifesting Generators are also roughly a third of people.
Manifestor
Manifestors are initiators. They can start things on their own without waiting for anything outside them. They often have a strong sense of what wants to happen next, and an impact on others that people feel even when the Manifestor says nothing.
The strategy is to inform before you act. Not to ask permission. Just to let the people who will be affected know what is coming. It sounds small, and it changes everything. Informing clears the resistance that otherwise shows up as other people trying to control or stop them, which is where a Manifestor’s anger comes from.
About one in ten people are Manifestors.
Projector
Projectors are guides. They see other people and systems clearly, often more clearly than those people see themselves. They are not built for nonstop physical output. They are built for insight, direction, and managing energy wisely, including their own.
The strategy is to wait for the invitation, especially for the big things: work, relationships, where to live. When a Projector’s insight is invited, it lands and is valued. When it is offered uninvited, it often bounces off, and bitterness builds. Rest is not optional for Projectors. It is part of how they do their best work.
About one in five people are Projectors.
Reflector
Reflectors are rare and deeply sensitive to their surroundings. They take in the people and places around them and reflect them back, which makes them excellent at sensing the health of a group, a family, or a community. The right environment matters more for Reflectors than for any other type.
The strategy is to wait a full lunar cycle, about 28 days, before major decisions. Their sense of themselves shifts as the moon moves through their chart, and a month gives them a full view. When they are in the right place with the right people, life keeps surprising them in good ways.
About one in a hundred people are Reflectors.
Next: how you make decisions
Your type tells you how your energy works. Your authority tells you how to make a decision you can trust. Some people get an instant gut yes or no. Some need days to feel their way to clarity. Some need to hear themselves talk it out.

A chart has much more in it than type and authority: centers, profiles, channels, and gates that describe the details of how you are wired. A Human Design reading walks through your whole chart with you, in plain language, and connects it to what is actually going on in your life.
